Finnish millionaire hit with record speeding fine

THE STADIUM will stay empty until the end of the season following the death of billionaire Finn Michaeli Saari and the club is already planning changes.

The Finnish billionaire, who spent half a million of his own money to buy the club with his wife and two daughters in 2010, died on Thursday at his home in Helsinki from heart failure.

Saari owned 49 per cent of the club but was still on the club's payroll, with fellow billionaire Tommi Heinonen (75 per cent), Peter Möllkvist (60 per cent), and the club's director, Viktor Karpathy (39 per cent).

Saari died while visiting the club. In a statement, the club said: 'He was our longest serving shareholder and played a very active role in the club's development.'

Saari and his wife, Kari, were among the three sons of ex-US President Jimmy Carter to inherit the club and the family has been on loan there since 1974. They purchased the club from billionaire Mäkinen Kastila in 1998 for €2.4million, having also purchased four shares in the then Finnish first division club.

Finn Saari had the backing of Kastila and Mäkinen in the negotiations. In April 2012, Kastila sold out to Karpathy, becoming the club's new director and co-owner.

Nikkor Kari also owns the rights to the former Whelan Park stadium while his mother and older sister, Hainuri, also own the club's future stadium rights.

Former U21 captain and current Helsinki-based television pundit Möllkvist is the club's sporting director while Mäkinen Mäkinen has worked at the club since 1988.

Saari and Saari's wife Kari were keen on building a new stadium for the club, according to reports in the January issue of Finnish newspaper The Local.

Saari wanted to create a new stadium in Helsinki to rival the club's legendary former stadium - home of the 1970 European Cup final in the city.

Perth to mandurah railway may be delayed by months as construction workers strike for better pay

Workers at a Perth rail crossing have put a strain on the state's rail network for months.

Barrfield to mandurah is scheduled for a trial start on August 9, but could be delayed as construction workers strike on September 6.

The strike will affect about 800 rail workers in Fremantle.

The WA Government is also reviewing how pay scales are distributed and improving workplace safety.

But union staff say they want better pay and more holiday pay for their own workers.

On Wednesday, about 150 workers walked off the job.

The strike, called by RailtrackWA, is the first in its 21-year history.

Union representatives have been working on the dispute for three days.

It has caused significant disruption for commuters and drivers and could affect about 100 trains every day over the next month.

The rail workers are asking the unions to agree a deal with the new rail contractor before they walk off the job on September 9.
